Why this kind of study works

The Learning Jet did not invent these ideas. Memory laboratories have tested them for more than a century. We put the reliable ones in an app students will actually open.

A fair claim: using the app is not a published clinical trial of The Learning Jet itself. The claim is narrower and stronger. The habits it enforces — retrieve, wait, retrieve again, connect ideas — are among the best-supported techniques in educational psychology.

Without review, recall of new material drops quickly, then more slowly. Waiting too long means relearning. Reviewing just as the memory weakens is cheaper than starting over.

A quantitative review of 839 assessments found that spacing study over time beats massing the same time into one sitting. The best gap grows with how long you need to remember.

Test-enhanced learning

Taking a test on material produces better long-term memory than spending the same time restudying it. The act of retrieving is the learning event.

Retrieval is necessary for learning

Repeated studying after you can already recall an item adds little. Repeated retrieval of that item is what keeps it available later.

Graduated interval recall

The Modern Language Journal, 51(2)

Pimsleur argued for expanding intervals measured in minutes, then hours and days, so a new item is asked for just before it would be lost.

In the app. The 1, 3, and 9 minute buttons follow that early schedule. The 1-day button is the first hand-off into longer memory.

Cards that you miss return sooner. Cards that you know move to boxes you open less often. Effort is spent where memory is weak.

A meta-analysis found that studying with concept maps is associated with stronger knowledge retention and transfer than studying text or outlines alone.
